Watering Basics

Proper watering is probably the most important task in growing and keeping your bonsai healthy.  There are many differing opinions on watering . Try a google search for "bonsai watering tips" , and you'll see what I mean.

For my plants, I water through the foiliage from the top using a mist / shower setting on my hose and a watering can for my plants that are indoors.  I've also suggested to individuals with only one plant that they could gently use their kitchen sink sprayer.  Be sure to completely saturate your plant until water is coming out of your drainage holes on the bottom to assure that all of the soil has been watered and all roots are moist.  I water early in the mornings to avoid leaf burn during the day and fungus development from watering late in the evening but it is an individual choice (see "Watering Differences" below).  However, it important to keep your bonsai soil mist and adapt to changing conditions.

I also mist quite frequently even though I live in Florida with high humidity.  The reason for this is that it is helpful in clearing out pollutants, dust and even insects and pests from the plant.  It is crucial to mist almost daily any plants that are indoors due to the loss of humidity due to heaters and air conditioning.  Remember that the majority of bonsai are outdoor plants so limit the amount of time they are kept indoors.

Watering Differences

Watering will differ due to many factors.  Seasons will affect your watering as less water will be needed during winter when the roots are dormant than during the spring growing seasons and the heat of summer.  Other factors will also affect your watering schedule such as your locale, climate, temperature, wind, humidity etc.  You'll have to evaluate your plants needs to insure proper watering.  Be sure that you never let your plants go dry!
